What You Need to Know About Auto Insurance in Connecticut

When you own and operate a motor vehicle, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are protected by auto insurance. In some states, insurance is suggested, however, auto insurance in Connecticut is required. If you want to legally drive, you must have at least the minimum coverage as required by law.

The minimum requirement is liability coverage, not comprehensive and collision or, as it is sometimes called, full coverage. Liability insurance includes:

  • Bodily injury
  • Property damage
  • Uninsured motorist

The idea is to ensure that you have insurance to pay for any damage you may cause in an accident.

The state has a mandatory reporting law. When you get insurance or when your insurance ends, your insurance company must report it to the state. The state is then alerted when a vehicle no longer has insurance coverage. If you do not have proper insurance in Connecticut, you may be subject to fines, registration suspension or even lose your right to register a vehicle in the state.

Connecticut takes auto insurance seriously and will find out if you don’t have proper coverage on vehicles registered in your name. Getting insurance coverage is in your best interest not only because it is required by law but also because it will protect you if you ever do get into an accident.
